Coffee talk—how to build business while sipping java
by Jennifer Pringle
For many of us, the thought of networking is overwhelming or intimidating. It can, however, be relaxing, interesting, thoroughly enjoyable and produce results.
If the thought of “working a room” is nerve-wracking, break up your networking goals into smaller, attainable steps. Basically, networking for business is getting to know people so you can help each other. I suggest the best way to accomplish this is by meeting people one-on-one over a nice hot coffee.
At your next networking meeting, take a look around the room. Choose a person you’d like to get to know, possibly someone with an interesting and/or complementary business. Introduce yourself and just chat. Then, if you think you would enjoy getting together for a coffee, suggest it. Or get a business card and call or send an e-mail later. Remember, most people would be flattered to get an invitation to meet for coffee.
This is the start of building good relationships. By taking the time to understand the product or service your colleague provides, you are in a better position to give those all-important referrals. You can learn a lot over coffee. It gives you a comfortable opportunity to show & tell in a supportive and mutually beneficial way. Most important, you are connecting with another great person in your community!
